The Mount Vernon City Library was built in 1954, with additions in 1969 and 1981. While the population of Mount Vernon has grown to over 30,000 people, the library remains at 13,000 square feet. The library is used by 46% of the city residents (2016) with daily visitors sometimes reaching more than 1000 people. The City has simply out grown its library shoes.
The significant limitations of the current building are:
- Lack of meeting space
- Lack of adequate restrooms
- Lack of electrical and internet cables
- Old construction that requires large remodel costs
- Not ADA compliant
